I liked this, makes me feel better as a content creator that if I were to write lgbt characters, I'd make them as they were written like they were 20 years ago. I've been hesitant to make them, thinking audiences would roll their eyes that this guy is making queer characters for fun

I am straight and always had been, but I was honestly disgusted by Catradora. Not because they were a couple in the end, but because the abuse Catra subjected Adora to. It was obvious from the start that Catra was abusive, and the writers tried to play it as "oh she's just playful and childish, like a wild cat" at first, but then the abuse got worse to the point that Catra literally tried to KILL Adora! And I'm not making this up, watch the series and you'll see. Not to mention the fact that Catra had some preeeetty bad offenses under her belt(Queen Angella for example) but by the end, everyone seemed to forgive her, just...because. Catra was still abusive, never offered Glimmer an apology, yet everyone was drawn to her like a magnet.

OMG I loved 6teen so much as a kid!! I remember vividly the episode where Jonesy and Wyatt are trying to pick up girls then at the end the girls are like "omg what? I thought you were gay" and Jonesy starts flipping out like "Gay??? GAY?!?! Are you serious??? IM NOT GAY!!" and my mom walked in and was like WTF are you watching lmaooo

Beauty and the Beast always weirded me out because the most objectionable stuff is Disney additions. I have an 1860 version (with some really pretty woodcut illustrations). The beast is never violent, he's just ugly. Belle is standing surety for her father, a medieval concept we don't really have, her father stole from the Beast and so his farm doesn't fail another member of his family voluntarily serves his sentence. He treats Belle really well.

Definitely would like to see another video on forgotten gays in the future.

Man I've almost forgotten about some of these shows. I wish this is just how they treated LGBTQ (and colored and disabled) characters nowadays. Make them an actual person with whom you could theoretically have a conversation with.

The discomfort that perma-fusions have around being separated reminds me of a friend from college who has DID. I knew the system for two years before they began going through integration therapy. The host found it rather distressing, even though he and the rest of the system agreed that it would be best for them. The host was struggling in college because he didn't have access to all of the memories, so any time another alter attended class it was like he never was there at all. The host told me that it was like some of the alters had "gone out for lunch" signs on their doors but never came back. In this sense, I think it is completely fair for people to feel incomplete as independent minds when they spent so long as conjoined minds.

I love this show and I loved your analysis of the characters. My personal experiences lead me to headcanon that Twilight and Yor are both autistic, just with different levels of masking. Obviously their weird mannerisms are written to be due to their upbringings, but I really relate to Yor feeling like she is failing at being a person. There's something about growing up autistic in a neurotypical society that makes you feel like an alien among humans. Loid is super good at fitting in, but he genuinely doesn't seem to understand what is even considered normal. This is most often seen between him and Yor, but he does it in other scenes too. I love this show with all of my heart.

I remember these shows! Vaguely, cos they were on at very inconvenient times so I didn't get to see them very often, but I remember them!

I wonder how Adventure Time fits in this discussion for you. The main series pulled the same bullshit like Korra. On the other hand, they had one good episode with Marceline and Princess Bubblegum afterwards. But I don't remember what people said back then about all that.

I love this channel so much in that you bring up really important subjects with animation, thank you for that! Growing up I didn’t get non binary or gender-fluid people at all, all I could think was “pick a side”. But as I grew older and realized for myself I couldn’t pick my own side and I found myself somewhere inbetween, that I’m non binary. Representation that I wish I could’ve seen as a kid means a lot to me. Bloodhound in apex was my introduction really into nonbinary characters and they helped me accept myself, that I’m not like some joke that 2012 RUclips with its SJW stuff. Then raine in owl house that I got to see when I’m turning into an adult and growing away from all the trauma and ignorance of my family.

Speaking as a gay dude I think Steven Universe might have made things worst for my representation. Stright men are more comfortable/turned on by lesbians so saphic rep was always a little more verdent. Anoying but there was always this undetone lesbians would lead the way with the rest close behind. Steven Universe however seems to have popularized this idea that Lesbian represnetion is actually more progressive because gay + woman, particularly in kids show.

Actually France has sth kinda similar to Canada I do not know exactly why the two countries have animation that is so interlinked but most the shows being show on French television weren't american but french and/or canadian. So thank you! The creator of the game In Stars and Time talked a lot about the americo-centrism of western media and so seeing this back to back makes me breathe easier. I loved "Sourire D'Enfer" and "Galaxie Lloyd" when I was younger so thanks for shouting them out! 👏🏾

I personally like when slice of life shows do gay rep over adventure fantasy, because it implies that lgbtqia+ is a part of real life , as opposed to something relegated to fantasy settings

Sharon might be "girl with gay best friend" but that's why that episode works so well, because it addresses how even friends can make harmful assumptions and stereotypes about LGBT people despite their intentions.

one thing i think its really cool about the three examples given here is that we know a queen like Dion, we know a lesbian like Nikki, and most importantly there are enby children having the struggle Zoit did in that show. we don't know shamans with mastery of elements who speaks to spirits. we don't know magical lesbian space rocks. we don't know trauma bonded catgirls (except maybe my wife but she's special and i will fight you). personally, i think its so important for casual lgbt representation because people need to see people that look and act like them.

You know what we do with the adbreaks in cartoons in Europe? Nothing! The commercials are at the end of an episode, not inbetween. Screen goes black for a moment, and we move on with the next scene. There doesnt have to be "something inbetween"

I knew about 6teen but i completely forgot about those other shows i remember they aired but not why or when so wow lily i thank you for reminding me of them wow thats amazing now the tumor of modern cartoons being held as possitives is.....gross like mega gross

When I was a kid there was a show that aired in 2006, about a group of people living in a boarding house and the daily routines and shenanigans that came with it, with a sort of grandma-like woman as the main character and keeper of the house. It was a mix of fantasy and reality, with talking animals, a forest troll and other colorful creatures and characters that showed up every other episode. One of the recurring characters was an artist- let’s call him John- who in one episode mentioned his best friend- let’s call him Henry- coming to visit and they share some cute moments looking over his paintings and I think John gave one of the paintings to Henry. And in a later episode Henry shows up again for a party with the houseguests and propose to John, who says yes, and it’s a really cute, genuine moment between the main characters and the guest characters where it’s treated as a lovely thing but never like a major milestone in media or anything like that. And yeah, they never say gay, boyfriends or husbands, and I don’t remember if Henry ever shows up again, but still. My ten year old mind was blown back when I saw it because it was one of the first times I’d ever seen two guys getting together before, and looking back it was very sweet and good representation. Also, side note, but it was a show made primarily for deaf and hard of hearing people with the actors doing sign language but voices being dubbed over in post so people who didn’t know sign language could also understand what they were saying and follow along with the story. I wish more shows like that were done today.

I grew up in 2004 in the US under an extremely conservative household. So strict that my parents went out of their way to block anything to “liberal” to keep me from being “brainwashed.” They restricted what channels I could watch, blocked specific websites from my internet searches, and strictly pre approved every book I was allowed to read. I didn’t know what the word “gay” meant until middle school because they didn’t teach me to hate LGBT people, but rather pretended they literally didn’t exist. All this so say, thank you for introducing me to these shows Lily. This video was such a joy to watch! I had no idea any of these guys existed and I adore them. I’m gonna go watch 6teen now.

Years back I saw Mr enter (yes I know) say that Korra should have been trouble water bending since her arc involved dealing with change. Thinking about Book 2 if that was case then it would have been an interesting thing to see: The water tribe has been so disconected from their culture that its own avatar learned the other elements before her own culture.

I think the reason some might think those slice of life shows don’t count/people only care about the Korra->Owlhouse pipeline was because there was no manufactured drama attached to the rep in braceface or 16. When shows play anything off as normal and something not to dwell on then the audience has to actively manufacture drama about that rep; and while there are people who do that, the vast majority of people passively absorb entertainment without thinking about it too much. Korra, SU and She-Ra gave hints and rumours and dragged their toes for seasons on end not out of fear of the studio but to drive up engagement. They manufactured the drama for the audience so the audience could spend more time reacting to the drama and less time thinking about the drama. When you’re reacting you more easily become emotional; when you become emotional you get attached; and when you get attached you overemphasize the importance/impact of said drama.

I was so disappointed when I stopped seeing 6Teen on TV. It was a really nice, comfy show for me, and I always felt like I was weird for remembering it. I'm so glad that this brought those memories back up. I was shocked to realize I still remembered names of characters after so long.

You unlocked a forgotten memory with Braceface cuz I REMEMBER when the show was airing on Disney Channel when I was a child with shows like the Buzz Lightyear show (which I associated more with Canal 7 if you know you know) and when Fairly Odd Parents was there too. Now I know why Dion's face seemed so familiar but I always thought he looked like a librarian. It's weird that the shows that aired in Canada were so prevalent in Mexico or Latin America overall...we fr get oscillated 😥😥😥

Going slightly off the rails here but the part where you touch on US-centrism informing people's perception about how good animation has gotten at LGBT rep reminds me that, in general, US-centrism is so parasitic and *terrible.* We have ignorant LGBT Americans shitting on countries in the Global South for being phobic not understanding that the very reason they're phobic is because of colonization, people in the Global South being forced to be hyperaware of American pop culture and politics for their own sake, and now of course specifically mentioned in this video: ignorant "Western animation" (American adventure fantasy) fans acting like the Owl House is the pinnacle of LGBT representation. It's just. Wow. Thank you for showing the examples of good rep. I look forward to watching them.
